MRI, Physical Therapy, and Rotator Cuff-Oh My

I t has been awhile since my last post on Stepping up To the Plate.  That doesn’t mean I have quit my fitness program, or dropped by dream of one more time playing baseball.  I have been working out regularly, and thanks to my daughter deciding to eat better, the entire family is eating better.  So, the past four weeks have not been a waste-or a waist either.

Of course, they haven’t been perfect weeks either.  My shoulders continue to ache.  I saw my family physician on Monday for a regular check-up and two courses he suggested I might take just don’t seem feasible to me.  The first was to have an MRI to determine whether or not I have a torn rotator cuff in either shoulder. The second possibility was for him to prescribe physical therapy.  Any way you look at it, his options were spelled $$$$, and like many others who work for small companies, my group insurance is high deductible.

I have received email with other alternatives, though living in a small Midwest town limits the availability of such options.  Acupuncture is one that might be available in Omaha, and I think I could overcome my fear of needles to rid my shoulders of pain.  Stay tuned.

I worked out yesterday with my PT Mike Clegg.  I still see Mike every other week.  I did forty minutes of cardio, split between a treadmill and a recumbent bike, plus I did a full set of lifts-arms, legs, and abs.  The cardio was pretty much like most of my work outs have been lately, but Mike always pushes me on the weights, though I have been using lighter weights on some exercises since my injuries in December.  My shoulders were sore this morning, but they are sore every morning.  I guess working through the pain is another option open to me.

For those of you who like to read about baseball in this blog, please check my Ron Speaks Out blog.  I have several posts about Rich and Ashley Thompson.  Rich is a relief pitcher in the Angels organization, and is one of just twenty-five Australians to play Major League Baseball.  Ashley provides an interesting look at what it is like to be a minor league wife.  Good stuff, and if the Angels give me the OK, there will be updates all season long.

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Glad you’re still DOING it! Even if it sucks. Hope 2009 is going well for you (I’ve been so busy, I haven’t been able to read other people’s blogs – but today, I’m making it a priority!). WORK THROUGH THE PAIN :)
